What’s the average running pace?

There isn't one "average running pace." It depends first on whether you mean an easy training run or a race, and then on age, sex and experience. For a 5K race, RunRepeat's published finish-time data works out (time ÷ distance) to a median pace of about 6:18/km (10:08/mile) for men and 7:30/km (12:04/mile) for women. Easy/training pace on an ordinary day should run noticeably slower than that: both are broken out fully in the tables below, using published numbers rather than a single flattering figure.

Race pace vs. easy pace: the distinction most pages skip

"Average pace" gets asked about two very different things, and most answers quietly pick one without saying so. Race pace is the pace someone holds during a timed event, at real effort. Easy pace (sometimes called training or conversational pace) is the pace of an ordinary day-to-day run, run comfortably enough to hold a conversation, and it should be meaningfully slower than race pace. Runners who train every run near race effort are a common reason progress stalls rather than builds; the tables below cover both, clearly labeled, instead of blending them into one number.

Average 5K race pace by age and sex

RunRepeat's analysis of US 5K race results (the same dataset behind Runked's guide to good 5K times) publishes average 5K finish times by age bracket and sex. Pace isn't published directly, so the figures below are a straight arithmetic derivation: each finish time divided by the 5 km (3.107 mile) race distance, not a separately measured statistic. As with the finish-time table it's built from, the source doesn't split 60–69 from 70+, so that's shown as one combined row rather than invented.

These are averages, not medians, and they include everyone who crosses a timing mat (first-timers and run-walkers along with trained racers), which is why they read slower than a dedicated club runner's pace. The all-age median works out faster: RunRepeat's separate percentile data puts it at 6:18/km (10:08/mile) for men and 7:30/km (12:04/mile) for women, which is the "recreational" row in the level table below.

Typical easy-run pace by level

These bands start from the same RunRepeat percentile data used for the "good 5K time" bands, converted to pace the same way as the table above. The easy-pace column then applies a widely cited coaching rule of thumb to each band's race pace: RunnersConnect's guideline of running 60–90 seconds per mile (37–56 seconds per km) slower than race pace on easy days. That offset is a general training guideline, not a separately published statistic, so treat the easy-pace column as an illustrative range rather than a hard number the way the race-pace column is.

Two runners can post the exact same clock pace and be having completely different runs: one cruising through an easy day, the other at the edge of what they can hold. That's the same reason Runked's weekly leagues score effort adjusted for your own fitness instead of raw pace: a beginner's honest effort and a faster runner's easy jog can land at the same pace and mean very different things.

For context: pace across race distances

Using the same derivation as above, here's median race pace at each distance, built from the recreational/median rows already published in Runked's 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon guides, all sourced to RunRepeat's percentile calculator.

Notice the median pace doesn't slow down as the distance goes up: if anything the 5K median is the slowest of the four. That's very likely a population effect rather than people running faster over longer distances: 5K fields include far more first-timers and charity participants, while the runners who show up for a 10K, half or full marathon skew toward people who already train for the distance. These medians compare different populations at each distance, not the same runner across distances. They're not a claim about how any individual's own pace changes as their race gets longer.

For a "most runners" anchor at the shorter end: parkrun UK (the free weekly 5K, closer to "everyone" than any competitive field) publishes its own average finish time, which rose from 22:17 in 2005 to 30:37 in 2025. That works out to about 6:07/km (9:51/mile), a figure parkrun itself attributes to the event getting more inclusive over two decades, not runners getting slower.

What's the average pace for beginners?

There's no single number, but two verified anchors help. parkrun UK's own published stats put its average 5K finisher (a field made up mostly of ordinary participants, not racers) at 30:37 in 2025, which works out to about 6:07/km (9:51/mile). In actual race conditions, RunRepeat's percentile data puts a first-timer's pace (slower than 90% of finishers) at 11:06–11:25/km (17:52–18:22/mile) or slower for women and 9:46–10:05/km (15:43–16:13/mile) or slower for men, once that percentile time is converted from a finish time to a pace. Either way, a beginner's honest pace is usually well slower than the age-bracket averages further down this page, and that's normal, not a problem to fix.

What's the average running pace by age?

Derived (time ÷ 5 km) from RunRepeat's published average 5K finish times by age and sex, average race pace for men ranges from about 6:18/km (10:08/mile) under 20 to 8:08/km (13:06/mile) at 60 and over; for women it ranges from about 7:44/km (12:26/mile) under 20 to 9:44/km (15:40/mile) at 60 and over, rising gradually through the brackets in between. Is 6:00/km slow?

It depends on the context. As a race pace, 6:00/km (about 9:39/mile) is faster than the derived men's "recreational" median of 6:18/km but short of the 4:41/km "good" cutoff; for women it's well inside "good" relative to the 7:30/km median, though a touch short of the 5:41/km "good" cutoff itself. As a training pace, 6:00/km is faster than the typical men's easy-pace range (6:55–7:14/km) and close to the "good" band's easy-pace range (6:18–6:37/km). The same 6:00/km can be a comfortable warm-up pace for a faster runner or a genuine effort for someone else, which is the whole reason a single number can't answer "is this slow."

Should easy runs feel slow?

Yes. An easy run should feel conversational and noticeably slower than race pace: RunnersConnect's commonly cited coaching guideline puts the gap at 60–90 seconds per mile (37–56 seconds per km) slower than race pace. Running easy days too close to race effort is a common way training stalls rather than improves.
